Landon pulls up to my grandmother’s house behind me, after suggesting a second pair of eyes would be better than just one. But with Ford’s insistence, the hope is that we’ll be done before dinnertime.

I want to know about Cade, and I have every intention of asking Ford, until his car pulls up behind Landon, and the first thing out of his mouth is, “Don’t know, only spoke with the man about a work thing.”

Ford knows my anguish, he’d been through it just months before, attempting to get a peak of Axton at every turn.

“Sorry, Tristan. I wish I knew. He’s angry. It’s misplaced, but only he can come to that conclusion, you know?”

I do know a little something about being angry, my own decisions taken from me, and I’m quiet, grabbing my key to the house.

“Is there anything else left here, that you need, because after today, I want to be done with this house, for all of us, Tristan.”

Ford may be a bossy bastard, but he’ll get no argument from me.

“I’ve gone through Gram’s stuff after her funeral. It’s why I know there’s paperwork in here. I bypassed it because fuck, I didn’t think the bastard would be eligible for parole.”

Opening the door to the shiplap and the charm my grandmother put into this house, I know I’ll miss it. But just like most things in life, this chapter is complete, and the only way to move forward is to close the whole fucking book.

“I have a realtor who’ll come by and assess the house,” I explain to both Ford and Landon.

We don’t need the money. Dad and Grams left seven-figure trusts to both Cass and me, but maybe it’ll give us a reason to move on, and get our own places, instead of being co-dependent on one another. At twenty-eight and twenty-four, it’s about time.

“So, what are we looking for?” Landon asks.

“Grams kept everything, and I mean everything. In the fourth bedroom upstairs…” Where Cassie and I hid during the murders, but I keep this detail to myself. “And there are at least twenty file cabinets. The police had given Grams the report, but when they digitalized them in the department, something went missing. They don’t have the trial notes. It’s why Cassie showed up the day you and Axton were tied up.”

“Okay, lead the way,” Landon instructs and the idea of Cassie bound against her will is probably more than he can stomach.

“I’ll warn you,” I begin as the stairs creak under our weight. “You may regret helping me when you see the room. My grandmother couldn’t part with anything, but fortunately, she kept it to one room, and not the whole house.”

We turn toward the hallway leading to my gram’s office, over the living and dining room. It’s large, and as I open it up, we’re all quiet.

“Shit, at least if your grams hoarded, she was a very organized hoarder.” Landon starts.

“I’m not sure hoarding and organized can go hand in hand, but hell, let’s take our wins where we can.
